Atwell College

Changes to Laptop Program 2015

Parents/Guardians,

The Atwell College - Parent Funded Laptop Program has been running for the past few years. We are well into our 3rd year or the program and we have a slight change to make. Until now, we have been using the Toshiba R930 and HP Probook 430 G1 models exclusively. TheToshiba R930 model came to its "end-of-life" cycle in June 2014. What this means is that due to technology advances and marketing Toshiba no longer make this model. Given this situation we started offering a new laptop, the HP Probook 430 G1. This new model comes with all the same support and software as previous models.

We are also allowing the use of certain Apple Macbook models on our school network. If you have a Macbook A1342 (white) or a Macbook PRO (prior to October 2014 - OSX Yosemite) you can bring these laptops into school and be supported. Only the models prior to the release of OSX - Yosemite operating system will work on a Department of Education network correctly. Brand new models with OSX Yosemite installed have a known drop-out issue on DoE networks and will cause loss of unsaved work and further network issues, this includes the current Macbook Air model.

Our direction is windows based machines that are 100% supported on DoE networks - with the HP Probook 430 our chosen and preffered model.

What does this mean for my child? In short, if your child has already bought the Toshiba R930 or HP Probook 430 they will continue to use the laptop at the college (and at home) with full support as per previously outlined. Those who do not have a laptop and wish to purchase one to further enhance their child's Digital Lesson experience will buy the new HP Probook 430 G1 . You may bring in an Apple Macbook Pro (prior to October 2014 - OSX Yosemite) or White A1342 Macbook currently used in certain areas of the college for digital lessons.

This model was chosen for many reasons. The laptop has been designed with education in mind. Spill resistant keyboards, extremely lightweight full alloy frame, thin sleek design and powerful standard specifications make it a great piece of school hardware. Not only is it a new generation of expanded specifications but the cost is significantly cheaper than previous models. The model is fully Dept of Education supported to ensure 100% network compatibility and no software hassles.

The full details, FAQ and ordering information will be available on our college website - http://www.atwellcollege.wa.edu.au .

The college has made significant end roads into progressing our Digital Learning Environment recently and this laptop is a great fit. Digital lessons are occurring more frequently and the students embracing it are finding an enriched learning experience for the modern digital age. We welcome you to join with the hundreds of students already participating in this rewarding program by purchasing the new HP Probook 430 G1 or continuing to bring your Toshiba R930 or Apple Macbook Pro / Macbook A1342 to school each day.
