Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation

This year, Atwell College Year 11 students have had the opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation as part of their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

This course delivered by Mr David Winter, is designed to introduce students to and give them a taste of the Outdoor Recreation Industry. The course focuses on a range of skills in outdoor recreation environments and activities.

There are five core Units of Competency in this qualification: apply first aid; assist in conducting outdoor recreation sessions; minimise environmental impact; work effectively in sport and recreation environments; follow occupational health and safety policies, plus a range of electives are offered to reflect industry sectors including bushwalking, surfing, and snorkelling and canoeing.

Atwell College students have been learning how to abseil on "artificial surfaces" under the direction of Outdoor Recreation Teacher, David Winter, before demonstrating their skills at Woodman Point later this term. This series of lessons over the next few weeks will enable the students to demonstrate the following Units of Competency:

SISOABA201A Demonstrate Abseiling on Artificial Surfaces

SISOABA202A Safeguard an Abseiler Using a Single Rope Belay System

Absences from the College

Please note certificate qualifications are assessed differently from Courses at the College and that if a students is absent from school for a period of time they may not have the opportunity to demonstrate a Unit of Competency and therefore will not be deemed "competent" in that particular competency. In turn, students who are not deemed "competent" in one or more Units of Competency within a qualification will not be awarded that qualification but obtain a statement of results instead.
